Sometimes I get really hungry. I just can't wait another minute for dinner. I want something to eat right now. I tell my mom I'm starving. I am not really starving I am just really hungry.
Starving is when you are hungry all the time. You go to bed hungry. You wake up hungry. You are hungry all day long. You are hungry every day. You have so little to eat, your body starts to eat itself up. You don't take a bite out of yourself or anything. Your body starts to feed on itself from inside. You use your own fat and muscles for energy.
If that happens long enough, you lose all your strength. You can't play, or laugh, or grow. You stay little. If you cry, you have so little of yourself left inside that you don't even have any tears.
When you are that hungry all the time, you get sick a lot. If you are too poor to buy food, you don't have money for doctors and medicine. You don't get shots to keep you well. When you get sick there is no one and nothing to make you well again. If no one starts to feed you and take care of you, you will die.
Half the children in the world are starving. That means one out of two. You and one friend are two children. If you count all of the children in the world in pairs, like you and your friend, one of those two children is starving.
The world had always been this way. But it doesn't have to be this way anymore!
There is enough food right now on our earth so that everyone could have two loaves of bread every day. There is enough food so that no one has to starve.
Doctors have shots to stop the six kinds of germs that make many children so sick that they die. One that stops polio germs costs only two cents. Just two pennies can keep a child alive!
There is a plan to help everyone feed themselves by the year 2000. The year 2000 is nine years from when this book was written in 1991. If you were seven in 1991, you will be 16 then. Do you think the world will be the same then, or different?
If you want the world to be better, it will be. No child has to die because they have no food and no doctor. There are one billion children in the world. Can you imagine what we can do together? We can go from being hungry to being full.
You can help by sharing this book. Share it with your friends, parents, teachers, grandparents, your church, club, scouts, sports team -- anyone you know to whom you can talk. You can ask them to help you write to the government to say how you feel and what you think about this. You can help them write letters too.
To create fullness, we have to let the half of the world that is full know that the half of the world that is starving can feed itself. If you teach them that right now we have enough food for everyone, you will have helped tremendously.
Many people think that there are just too many people in the world to feed. That is not true. There is plenty of food for everyone. Many people think that feeding people will only help them live long enough to have babies. They think that when they have too many babies we will not have enough food. That isn't true either. When people have children they know will be healthy and not die, they stop having more children.
You can help them to find out more of the truth about hunger and the ways we can make this a world of fullness, by contacting the groups listed at the end of this book.
Just by letting more people know that we have plenty of food for everyone, you will help change the world. You are a very powerful child. You can change hunger to fullness. Then we can all start to live happily ever after.
